Bobcat Spotted in the Shores

Provided By Planet Rockwall
The Shores -- Sunday, at 4:45 PM, a Bobcat was seen running across the street on North Lakeshore Drive, near the school, headed towards the wooded area. The Shores Homeowners Association again reminds residents to use CAUTION.
All small animals are game; small dogs and cats. "A cat left out over night is just a 'snack'...Remember Bobcats can climb trees, as well."
It is somewhat unusual the Bobcat is being seen frequently in the daytime. The sightings suggest he lives close by. As long as he has a food source here, he will stay. The best way to get him to move on is to NOT allow food for him. Keep cats inside at night and never leave pet food outside. Do not leave small dogs unattended.
There are over 130 homes in the immediate area - tell your neighbors.

Fire Smart Christmas Tree Tips

Provided By Planet Rockwall
As you decorate your home this holiday season, be fire smart. A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly. The following are a few "Fire Smart" tips:
Picking the tree: Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.
Placing the tree: Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 1–2” from the base of the trunk.
Location: Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. Also, make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.
Be sure to add water daily to your tree stand. The first few days are the most important, as your tree will drink a lot of water.
Lighting the tree Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use. Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of mini string sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of LED strands to connect.
Never use lit candles to decorate the tree.
Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
FACTS:
• One-third of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems.
• Each year, fire departments respond to roughly 260 structure fires caused by Christmas trees.
• A heat source too close to the tree causes one in every five of the fires.

Rockwall County in Top Ten for Healthiest Counties in Texas

Provided By Planet Rockwall

As if there weren't enough reasons to love living in Rockwall, a new study just released ranks Rockwall County as one of the top ten healthiest counties in the state. Not a trivial accomplishment given that there are over 250 counties in Texas.

In a study which considered statistics gathered over a ten year period, researchers from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute ranked Texas counties on health outcomes, which represent how healthy a county is, and health factors, which influence the health of the county. In each category Rockwall County came in 6th and 4th respectively among the 221 counties ranked in the study.

The health outcomes rankings look at mortality rates, percentage of low birthweight births, and self-reported fair or poor health. Rockwall's ranking of 6th overall indicates that we enjoy a far higher than average life span along with a greater percentage of those years spent in good, rather than poor, health.

Health factors ranking looks at the items that contribute to the good or poor health rankings of a particular population segment. These include health behaviors, availability of clinical care, social and economic factors, and physical environment. Health behaviors include measures of smoking, diet and exercise, alcohol use, etc. Social and economic factors consider education, employment, income and community safety. Physical environment looks at environmental quality and infrastructure. Rockwall's ranking in these factors was 4th overall.

Studies like this one can be used in any number of ways. A county ranked near the bottom could use the factors listed to develop programs to improve health in the community. A county such as Rockwall, which is rated highly, can use the information to see what they are doing right, and to encourage programs to keep our health consciousness at a high level.

Tornadoes, Rain and Wind Hit Rockwall County

Provided By Planet Rockwall

Tropical storm Hermine brought Rockwall and the surrounding area their share of excitement Wednesday afternoon, as tornadoes touched down in Heath and Forney. The Heath storm damaged several houses in the Meadow Creek neighborhood.

In Rockwall a funnel cloud was seen as it floated over The Shores neighborhood. From an alley on Crestway Drive, Shores resident Donny Lauderback used his cell phone to capture footage of the funnel cloud. Lauderback said, "It was down for about 2 minutes, and was south of us, towards the clubhouse."

Funnel Cloud Over The Shores:

The National Weather Service placed rain totals for the county from 2.5 inches in southeast Rockwall County to over 4 inches in the northwest part of the county. Water levels in Lakes Lavon and Ray Hubbard are slowly beginning to rise as tributary flows spiked near flood stages overnight. Lake Lavon is currently at around 5 feet below normal, and Ray Hubbard is at 3 feet below, having risen about 1.5 feet since Wednesday.

D. A. Makes an Offer You Can’t Refuse

Provided By Planet Rockwall

The office of Rockwall County District Attorney Kenda Culpepper has announced that there will be a press conference to announce the second annual Labor Day "No Refusal Weekend". Scheduled for Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at 10:30 a.m., it will be held on the steps of the Rockwall County Historical Courthouse located at 101 E. Rusk on the Rockwall square.

In a Statement issued by her office, Culpepper said, "This program has received wide support, assistance, and cooperation from a number of fronts including law enforcement, judges, city and county officials, and local hospitals who have agreed to provide trained phlebotomists to draw the blood evidence. I have invited all of the local police chiefs, the Rockwall County Sheriff, the Rockwall County Constables, and other law enforcement supervisors to participate in the press conference. I also expect that county commissioners, judges, hospital personnel, and other local officials will attend. All officials should additionally be available for comment after the event."

The program will run from midnight September 6 through 5 P.M. September 10. During that time, any driver pulled over and suspected of driving while intoxicated will be given a choice take either a breath or blood test. If the driver refuses, the officer can get a warrant to draw blood without their consent. The County will have three judges on call to issue the warrants, and certified medical personnel on hand to do the blood draw.

Culpepper said that last year's No Refusal Weekend was so successful that it produced only three arrests for drunk driving, a testament to the program's deterrent effect. Operators of motor vehicles and boats "got the message."

Race Week in Rockwall

Provided By (PRBob)

If you've ever crossed the Interstate 30 causeway over Lake Ray Hubbard on a warm Wednesday afternoon, or taken more than a cursory glance at the Rockwall City logo, then you're no doubt aware that we do a fair amount of sailing here. On any given weekend, just about any time of the year, one can see sailing craft of all sizes from dinghies up to luxury cruising vessels, each striving to catch the evening breeze sweeping across the lake. The fact that these winds are generally pretty reliable makes Ray Hubbard one of Texas' most popular inland sailing venues. No fewer than three marinas around the lake offer services and slips for sailors, and weather permitting, races both formal and informal are held several times a week.

There can be no denying that the premier sailing event of the season is Dallas Race Week. Almost always held during the week of summer solstice in June, Race Week attracts sailors from all over North Texas. Started in 1984 by a group of local sailors, it was modeled after a week-long event held every spring in Antigua. The group, led by local racer Scott Self, had raced in the event and had so much fun that they decided to put one together in the Dallas area. Over the years, Race Week evolved into a fund raiser for local charities, and is now hosted by the Rockwall Breakfast Rotary Club on behalf of non-profit groups in our area. This year's race, held a month later than usual to take advantage of the new docks at the harbor, raised approximately $20,000 through corporate sponsorships and entry fees.

Most participants of Race Week would agree that the thrill of the race is only half the fun. Local establishments such as the Hilton and Flying Saucer host after-race parties with food, drink and music, while private parties may spring up at a moment's notice at any number of docks. For many, this is the time to connect with friends they may see only once a year.

The race committee is charged with keeping the race fun by setting courses which are challenging while being easily observed by those on shore. A fleet of boats flying colorful spinnakers on a downwind leg is an undeniably beautiful sight to behold, whether from vantage points on land or on water. Scott Self and Stephen Straughan, this year's chairmen, set a series of courses with an even greater variety than usual. "This year", said Self, "we wanted to cover every corner of the lake to keep it interesting for the sailors, and to give more sponsors a chance to participate." For the first time, racers got a chance to start and finish in the area near Bass Pro, getting a chance to try out the new guest docks and to sample the amenities of the new restaurants in that part of the lake.

If you've been bitten by the sailing bug but don't have a boat, fret not. Many boat owners, or "skippers", have room on board for those with experience, or are willing to learn the sport. Taking lessons at a local sailing school is a good way to hook up with skippers in need of crew. Sometimes, just walking along the docks and striking up a conversation with a saling crew will get you on board. If keeping your legs on land is more your style, there are plenty of places to watch the action. The lighthouse at the Harbor and the jetty at Chandler's Landing are two of the best places to observe the start and finish lines. To the south, Rush Creek Yacht Club hosts at least one race a week offshore of their clubhouse. Those who want to get out on the water for a closer look, but don't want to work at trimming sails can try an evening cruise on the Seawolf . But be advised - getting that close to the action is likely to get you hooked. You'll be back for more.

Underwater? Alternatives to Walking Away

Home owners who are "underwater" with their home loan and seek to come up for air by walking away from the debt, could still be gasping for relief years down the road.

There are occasions when walking away from your home -- and down the road to foreclosure -- is your only option, but seldom is it the best alternative.

Mortgages are "underwater" or "upside down" when the property experiences negative equity -- the mortgage is larger than the current value of the property. Negative equity is caused by a decline property value, an increase in mortgage debt or, most likely, both.

The consensus among experts is to consider the alternatives before abandoning your home, talk with your lender and seek counseling from a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Affairs (HUD) certified counselor.

Don Bisenius, the head of Freddie Mac's home-loan guarantee business, recently asked borrowers to stick it out through the crisis.

Bisenius said foreclosures lead to degraded neighborhoods, more expensive mortgages and reduced home values.

"In the end, borrowers considering a strategic default should recognize the damaging impact their actions can have on others," he wrote.

The Obama Administration's frequently updated and strengthened multi-tiered MakingHomeAffordable.com program and other government efforts offer a good start with a host of options.

• Refinancing, turning in your existing mortgage for a new one, is perhaps the toughest option to accomplish. A refinance requires meeting stiff underwriting requirements -- an excellent credit report, a high credit score of 720 or more, documented career level income and little debt, for starters.

Federal programs, including the Federal Housing Administration's refinance effort, can be a good bet for those who haven't yet faced hardship and can qualify for a new loan.

• A mortgage modification reworks the terms of existing loans to get the payment down to a more affordable level. To add greater affordability, lenders lower the interest rate, lengthen the term of the loan or reduce the principal -- or do some combination of all three. Modifications can be used by qualified home owners who aren't yet struggling as well as those who are in a pinch.

• Short sales

Modifications and short sales can impact your credit, but not necessarily with the force of a foreclosure.

Bottom line, exploring all the options is a better first step than walking away. I understand feeling financial pressure is difficult and embarrassing, but there is a point at which everyone has time to explore the options. In just about every case, that's much better than doing nothing at all. I strongly feel there is no reason for anyone to get a foreclosure" said Zdenka Mahan, a real estate agent with Intero Real Estate in Los Gatos.

Heat Advisory Through Sunday

Plan on taking extra steps to stay cool this weekend. Weather experts say we're in for serious --possibly dangerous -- heat through Sunday evening. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory until 7 p.m. Sunday. That means heat index values -- the "feels like" temperature -- will be 105 degrees or more in the afternoon. And overnight lows won't get below the upper 70s.

For a complete weather forescast, watch my Fox DFW.

If you're going to be outside any time today or this weekend, be sure to wear loose light clothing and drink plenty of water. If you're going to be out in the pool or on the lake, don't drink a lot of alcohol. Beer or any other alcohol will actually dehydrate you and make you more susceptable to heat-related illnesses.

The NWS also wants North Texans to check on elderly neighbors, and reminds everyone never to leave children or pets in a vehicle.

Toyota Cup Triathlon

Published By The City of Rockwall

The 2010 Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series Race to the Toyota Cup will be held in Dallas on October 10. This year, the Toyota U.S. Open Triathlon features a new course at The Harbor in Rockwall.

The new course changes the event from its original point-to-point format to a circular course. It offers a 1,500m swim at Lake Ray Hubbard, with a 40k bike ride through the community of Rockwall, and a 10k run that starts and ends at The Harbor in Rockwall.

“We are thrilled and proud to be hosting the U.S. Open, where the Race to the Toyota Cup Champions will be crowned,” said Rockwall Mayor Bill Cecil. “The Harbor complex is the perfect setting for this event, for athletes and spectators alike.”

Held four consecutive years in Dallas, the Toyota U.S. Open Triathlon serves as the championship event for the six-race Life Time Fitness Triathlon Series Race to the Toyota Cup.

“I am excited about our new course design which improves participant logistic and spectator viewing,” said Dave Campbell, vice president, Life Time Fitness Athletic Events. “Logistically, the new course will substantially enhance participants’ experience, streamlining equipment transportation, transition areas and lodging. For participants and spectators alike, the Harbor offers the perfect landscape.”
